FAQ

What Is A2 Milk? Is It better for digestion?

Originally, all cows produced A2 protein in their milk, but a genetic change introduced A1 protein, which can be harder for some people to digest. Our Pioneer Pastures A2 milk contains only the A2 protein, unlike most conventional milk, which has A1 protein. For those who experience issues with conventional milk, A2 offers the same nutrients like protein, calcium and vitamins with fewer digestive concerns. Learn More.

What are your sweeteners made from?

Our flavored products are naturally sweetened with monk fruit juice concentrate.  Monk fruit is extracted in just RO water, no alcohols (like other sweeteners). It is then passed through ceramic filters, which eliminates proteins and other solids and impurities without the addition of any solvent or chemical.

Sugar and other sweeteners, however, use chemicals such as CaOH and alcohols in the processing of the material.

Are your cows treated with rBST?

No

What is the soil health the cows are raised on?

Soil health is closely monitored by our farming partners. For reference, our farms are closely regulated by permits from their respective counties, State and Regional Water Quality Control Board, State and Local Air Pollution Control District, State Irrigated Land Regulatory Programs, and State and Local Sustainable Ground Water Management Agencies. All of which issue permits that each dairy must maintain compliance through annual reporting to those agencies.

Our dairies use certified Nutrient Management Plans and follow engineered-designed manure management plants to minimize their farms’ environmental footprint and help protect waterways and groundwater resources. Within those plans and annual reports include “nutrient balancing” that details all land application activities and soil testing and monitoring. Composted manure application is also implemented by our farming partners. The natural material is used in regenerative feed-crop farming practices that help build healthy soils. This use of manure nutrients contributes to healthier soil. The various regulatory agencies complete on-site audits to ensure reports match the implanted practices occurring on-site.

Advanced Nutrition

Pioneer’s farming partners utilize nutritionists to ensure maximum animal health. The farmers and the nutritionists work together to formulate specific rations that meet a cow’s need based on their age and stage of the lactation cycle.

The rate and diversity of agricultural byproducts within the animal feed found on most farms is unique. Surrounding our dairy farms are farming communities that provide over hundreds of specialty crops. Additionally, not every fruit and vegetable makes it to the supermarket, and instead is “upcycled” into on-farm feed.

What are your cows fed?

As far as animal feed, each of our farms utilize a nutritionist to ensure maximum animal health. A producer and the nutritionist will work together to formulate specific rations that meet a cow’s need based on their age and stage of the lactation cycle. As you can image, with nearly 300 farms, there will be some variety farm-to-farm as far the formulation of those rations; especially once you factor in location within California and access to specific ingredients. The UC Davis CLEAR center did a study on what the California dairy cow eats that summarizes these diets quiet well and provides the average breakdown of forages, hays, grains, byproducts, and minerals & vitamins within a ration. Not only did our members participate in this study but given that all of our members are located and operate solely in California, we are confident that this study is the best representation of animal diets throughout our membership.

It is worth noting the rate and diversity of agricultural byproducts within the animal feed found on our farms is unique to California. California is an agricultural powerhouse, surrounding our dairy farms are farming communities that provide over 400 specialty crops to the world. The Golden State Advantage to our cows is that not every fruit and vegetable makes it to the supermarket, and instead is “upcycled” into on-farm feed.

Are your products gluten free?

Yes
