A2 vs. A1: A New Take on Milk Intolerance

Milk containing A2 β-casein caused fewer digestive symptoms than conventional milk with A1 β-casein, suggesting that A1 β-casein, not lactose, may be the trigger for milk intolerance in some people.

Noticeable Symptom Relief

Participants who drank milk containing only A2 β-casein reported significantly less bloating, abdominal pain, flatulence, and stomach rumbling (a.k.a. borborygmus), as well as improved stool frequency and consistency.

Better Lactose Digestion

Researchers also found higher levels of urinary galactose after participants consumed A2-only milk. This suggests that A2 milk may support more effective lactase activity, potentially making it easier for the body to digest lactose.

Effective Across the Board

Interestingly, the benefits were seen in both lactose absorbers and malabsorbers. This indicates that the reduced gastrointestinal symptoms weren’t simply due to improved lactose digestion, it points to the A1 β-casein protein itself as a likely contributor to digestive discomfort.
